  1. Using Opera or Mozilla browser
  2. Using Internet Explorer on Linux with CrossOver/Wine

Playing DOD content with Opera or Mozilla browser

For this you'll need:

a) Mozilla or Opera browser for Linux
Download and install the latest stable version from www.mozilla.org/download.html or www.opera.com
Our users have successfully employed both Mozilla 1.4.3 and Opera 8.51, and both work fine.
b) Plugger 5.1.3
You'll need this to enable your browser to play multimedia applications. Download it from http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger.html and install it.
c) RealPlayer10 for Linux
Download and install RealPlayer10GOLD.bin from www.real.com/linux.
After installation make sure that "realplay" application is in your executable path. You can do this by setting the $PATH environment variable in your ${HOME}/.cshrc or ${HOME}/.bashrc, whichever the case may be.
setenv PATH ${PATH}:/what-ever-path/RealPlayer

After installation is completed, re-start your browser. You'll need to enable plug-ins and JavaScript for your browser.
For Opera, select
Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Content -> Enable JavaScript
Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Content -> Enable plug-ins

For Mozilla, select
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Scripts & Plugins -> Enable JavaScript for -> Navigator

You can check your plugger installation at http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger/test.htm.

Now go to the Demos on Demand site and choose your desired demo and click "Play."
If you get an error saying "You must install a media player ..." (in case of Mozilla) or "Your browser is not compatible ..." (in case of Opera), just click "OK" and move on. Your demo should play anyway.

(For Opera, make sure you have selected Tools -> Quick preferences -> Identify as Opera or
Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Browser Identification -> Identify as Opera)

Now, you should see a RealPlayer window come up in which your selected Demo will play.

If you get an error message saying "Plugger: No appropriate application for type text/html found" then you'll need to add the appropriate MIME entry for your browser.

For Opera, go to Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Downloads. Unselect "Hide file types opened with Opera". Now look for "text/html" under MIME type. If no entry is present, then make a new entry. It should read as -
MIME typetext/html
File extensionshtml, htm, shtml, ehtml
Select "Open with Opera"

For Mozilla, go to Edit -> Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper Applications. Look for "text/html" under "File types". If no entry is present, then make a new entry. It should read as -
MIME typetext/html
DescriptionHyperText Markup Language
Extensionhtml, htm, shtml, ehtml
Open it withMozilla

Playing DOD content with Internet Explorer on Linux with CrossOver/Wine

For this you'll need:

a) Wine and CrossOver Office
You can get this from www.codeweavers.com.
b) Windows Media Player
You can get Windows Media Player 10 from www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia. If this does not work for you try an older version, say 7.1 or 6.4. You can get these older versions from here. Install it using Wine.

Run Internet Explorer using Wine. Go to Demos On Demand web site, choose your desired demo and click "Play." If all installations are correct, it should play.

If you are familiar with Crossover, you'll find that playing DOD content with Internet Explorer on Linux simpler than playing it with Opera or Mozilla browser. However, users have reported that audio quality is not as good, when content is played with IE, so you may prefer Opera or Mozilla browser.
